Fostering Student Learning and Preventing Teacher Burnout

In Fostering Student Learning and Preventing Teacher Burnout: A Self-Help Survival Guide for Classroom Management, educator, principal, and teacher trainer Dr. Barbara G. Foster draws on more than 50 years of experience in classrooms, administration, and higher education to deliver a compassionate, research-informed self-help survival guide for today’s teachers. Through a compelling medical metaphor, the book unfolds as a series of supportive “sessions” in which a weary teacher (“A. Teacher”) consults with Dr. Foster to explore the symptoms of chronic stress, anxiety, and burnout, then apply targeted, prescriptions that heal, restore energy, prevent burnout, and prioritize fostering student learning.
Jane Vella (2004) asserts that adults learn most effectively through dialogue. The book’s engaging dialogue between A. Teacher and Dr. Foster helps readers discover how to implement these restorative prescriptions:
- Apply Active Engagement in learning activities,
- Maintain High Expectations to inspire every student,
- Use Appropriate Assessments to foster student learning,
- Promote Trustworthy Behavior and self-discipline, and
Sustain Effective Communication with students and families. Grounded in learning theory, instructional design, and insights from David A. Sousa, Paulo Freire, Carol Dweck, and others, Dr. Foster empowers novice and veteran teachers to maintain or reclaim classroom control, sustain or renew a passion for teaching, and enhance or create supportive learning environments where both students and educators thrive
